4,000 have been reported to FIDA between January and June 2016.

Chairperson Josephine Mong'are on Thursday said most cases go unreported due to cultural acceptance of domestic violence.

“What we are seeing today is more aggravated and people are taking it up as revenge to show who is superior in the relationship”, Mong’are said.

Mong'are said some of the severe cases we have received apart from Jackline Mwende whose hands were chopped off allegedly by her husband include ; a case from Makueni where the woman's hands and legs were cut and her husband is still in police custody.

"In Kiambu, another case was reported where a woman was run over by her husband and police are still looking for him. In Nairobi a lady was beaten up in Dandora and lost her eyesight", she said.

Mong’are

said despite some domestic violence victims reporting to them or the police, they do not show up in court to provide evidence.

“Most of these victims end up dead or seriously injured as they fail to follow up on their cases. You are left with a crime without a witness and without a complainant and so the cases collapse because witnesses are not coming forward, Mong’are said.
