Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto has said he is not opposed to construction of Itare dam but he only wants the public engagement on the project.

“I might be in agreement but elders who were not involved are opposed to it,” he said.

His remarks were in response to sharp criticism against him for opposing projects initiated by the national government.

More on this:

“I sent my officers to find it out and it is good idea and will benefit Kenyans living in Nakuru County but i only insist that public should be told on its good,” he said.

Rutto said if the project will not affect the normal flow of water downstream then there are no issues with its establishment.

He said elders had raised concern because they were not involved in public participation.

“People in the rural do not understand that is why they fear for their lives.” He said.

He added that he should not be taken to be opposing projects initiated by National Government saying he had no problem with it.

Kipsigis Council of elders from Bomet and Kericho wants the project stopped because it was hazardous to environment.

They have threatened to go to court over the matter.
