President Uhuru Kenyatta will on Thursday officially lay the foundation of an institute set to be built in honour of the late Nobel Laurette Prof Wangari Maathai.

The Institute for Peace, Environment and Sustainable Development will be stationed at the University of Nairobi, Kabete campus.

The facility is set to be a hub of activities that target improved natural resource management and education for sustainable development.

The institute, which will be constructed by South African-based DHK Architects, is

expected to meet stringent sustainability and conservation criteria.

It aims to achieve close to 100 per cent carbon emission reduction to immortalise Maathai's legacy on peace, environment, democracy, human rights and sustainable development.

The environmental conservator died on September 2011 aged 71 years following ovarian cancer complications.

She founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organisation focusing on planting trees, environmental conservation, and women's rights.

In 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for "her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace".
