Eliud Kipchoge clinched the marathon gold with an efficient display of road running in Rio on Sunday evening as the August games came to an end.

Kipchoge who won the London marathon this year posted 2:08.44 to become the second Kenyan after Samuel Wanjiru in 2008 to win gold in the 42 kilometer race.

Ethiopia's Feyisa Lilesa who was involved in titanic battle with Kipchoge had to settle for the silver in a time of 2:09.54 with Galen Rupp of the United States taking the bronze medal in a personal best time of 2:10.05.

Kenya two other competitors in in the race Cherangany member of Parliament Wesley Korir and Stanley Biwott failed to finish the event.

Kipchoge is a renown Kenyan long distance runner who has won medals at the Olympic and World level.

The 31 year old came to prominence in 2003 by winning the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

He gave Kenya a 6th gold medal to place Kenya at 15th position in the Rio Olympics.

Kenya has a total of 13 medals out of which 6 are gold, six silver and one bronze.

United States is at the top of the table with 118 medals followed by Great Britain with 66 medals while China is third with 70 medals out of which 26 are gold compared to GRB 27 gold.
