Local telecommunication and broadcasting firms have been asked to list on the Nairobi Securities Exchange to create more value and growth in the Information, Technology and Communication sectors.

ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru on Wednesday said firms in the ICT sector have shunned the bourse despite the huge growth opportunities that come with listing.

The CS said listing will create job opportunities, avail capital for growth, and strengthen the country’s capital market.

“We are trying to provoke these businesses that have reached the threshold go ahead and list. In my feel, there are many businesses that are ready to list,” Mucheru said, on the sideline of the draft national ICT policy-stakeholders consultation forum.

The CS singled out a number of firms that have the potential to be listed, which include Royal Media and Seven Seas.

Currently, only Safaricom is listed on the NSE’s telecommunication and technology market segment.

“ICT businesses around the world have proven growth by going to the market. We need to see more players coming on board.”
