World silver medallist Elijah Manangoi's Olympic Dream ended prematurely after he incurred an injury in the first round of the 1500m on Wednesday.

Team Kenya press attaché Peter Angwenyi said Managoi was dropped during the first round and the doctors ruled him out after undergoing a scan.

Manangoi was supposed to run in Wednesday's semi finals alongside Asbel Kiprop and Ronald Kwemoi.

The trio were expected to sweep the board.

"Prior to his injury in the first round, Manangoi was enjoying top form and we expected him to win a medal [even] if not gold," he said.

He, however, noted that Asbel and Kwemoi have vowed to win medals in honour of their injured colleague.

Manangoi had placed second in 3:46.83 during the first round of the 1500m, behind Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi who clocked 3:46.82.

United States' Robby Andrews was third in the heat in 3:46.97.

Meanwhile, Olympics women's marathon gold medallist Jemimah Sumgong is among the second batch of Team Kenya athletes and officials arriving in Nairobi Friday at 8pm.

Sumgong returns together with the Kenya Rugby Sevens team, boxers and weightlifting squad.
