A Chinese tour guide has been charged with the murder of a tourist at Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Li Changquin was accused of killing Luo Jinli on August 8 at Sun Africa Hotels Keekerok Lodge.

Changquin denied committing the offence when he took plea after confirming he had undergone a psychiatric test to prove his fitness.

He appeared before Nakuru High Court Judge Maureen Odero on Wednesday.

The Chinese national allegedly stabbed Jinli and her husband several times in the chest using a pen knife. Jinli's husband survived the attack.

Their two children watched while they were attacked after a disagreement over sitting arrangements for dinner.

Through lawyer Cliff Ombeta, Changquin asked the court to grant him reasonable bond terms saying he had lived in Kenya for more than 20 years and was

unlikely a flight risk.

“My client has been in Kenya since 1997 and has established businesses here,” said Ombeta.

But state prosecutor Joel Chirchir wanted the accused to surrender his passport and report to the DCIO in Narok every month until the case is heard.

“We have no compelling reasons against the bond terms. We however ask that the accused be released on Kenyan sureties," he added.

Changquin was granted release on a Sh1 million bond with a Kenyan surety of the same amount.

Odero said he will be remanded to Naivasha GK Prison if he fails to raise bond.

He said Changquin should report to Naivasha High Court, where the case will be heard, to obtain a date.

Odero said the accused's passport will be withheld until the case is heard and determined.

He directed him to report to the DCIO every month starting September 1.
