Nairobi governor Evans Kidero has blamed skewed revenue allocation formula for the slow pace of development in the city.

He said the county has a huge wage bill of Sh18 billion against the national government's allocation of Sh14 billion every year.

Kidero says the devolved unit is suffering a bloated workforce, having inherited 6,000 workers from the council and another 9,000 from the national government.

The sentiments came even as the business community in Nairobi complained to the governor about rampant harassment by county officials, high taxes and poor services provided by his administration.

The Nairobi county coalition of business membership organisations said garbage, noise, congestion and filthy markets must be dealt with urgently.

They cited high-handedness of the city askaris, outdated water and sewerage infrastructure, water rationing, traffic congestion, uncontrolled hawking, illegal structures/encroachments as some of the things that the city seems to have a turned a blind eye on.

The coalition - composed of KNCCI, Retail Trade Association of Kenya, Cereal Groves association, KARA, Kenya Association of Manufacturers, KENYA Property Developers Association among others - held a meeting with the governor in Nairobi on Tuesday, August 16.
