16 Nyamagwa girls still admitted after accident that killed four

Sixteen students of St Mary’s Nyamagwa Girls Secondary School are still admitted at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Four students died while many were injured when the school's new bus was involved rolled several times in accident in Kisii last Friday.

Hospital CEO Enock Ondari said 15 were out of danger and that one had been critical but was in stable condition.

Speaking to the Star on phone, Ondari said three would be discharged in the course of the day.

The while the students returned to school from a road trip they took to celebrate the purchase of the new bus.

Bus driver Eric Kituma was on Monday when he faced charges of killing and injuring students.

Kituma faced five counts including dangerous driving resulting in the death of four students.

He was also charged with careless driving leading to the injury of more than 75 students. He denied all the charges.

Senior resident magistrate Naomi Wairimu granted the accused release on a Sh500,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount.

State counsel Elizabeth Waruguru did not oppose the bond but requested that they be supplied with witness statements before the case commences.

The case will be mentioned on September 2 and heardon December 20.

The accident was the second worst in the area. One involving a

Rioma Secondary School bus left nine students and fours teachers dead. The accident took place three years ago while they were on their way to a sports event.
