Nyamagwa Girls bus driver released on Sh500,000 bond

The driver of the Nyamagwa Girls High School bus that pleaded not guilty during his court appearance on Monday.

Eric Kituma faces five counts including dangerous driving and causing the death of the four students.

He has also been charged with careless driving, leading to the injury of more than 70 students.

Senior resident magistrate Naomi Wairimu granted the accused Sh500,000 bond and a surety of a similar amount.

State counsel Elizabeth Waruguru did not oppose the terms but requested to be supplied with witness statements.

The case will be mentioned on September 2 and heard on December 20.

The Friday accident occurred on Kisii-Itumbe-Igare road while the students returned to school from a road trip they took to celebrate the purchase of the bus.

Kituma, an Associated Motors driver, is alleged to have been speeding when the overloaded vehicle overturned while negotiating a sharp corner.

The 52-seater vehicle had 78 students at the time of the accident in Rioma area.

Three years ago, a bus belonging to Rioma Secondary School killing nine students and four teacher.
