There was drama in Naivasha after irate residents stormed a police station to demand the release of an assistant chief arrested for allegedly peddling bhang.

The residents led by area MP

John Kihagi of Maraigushu accused the police of stage-managing the arrest.

They accused the police of been used by a senior politician to antagonize Peter Irungu.

"We suspect a Nominated Senator is behind this and we cannot allow to see an innocent officer been mistreated just because he disagreed with a politician", one of the residents said.

Trouble started after police raided the subchief house on

Monday and allegedly recovered fifteen rolls of bhang before arresting him.

The move angered area residents who marched to the police station pointing an accusing finger at the senator who incidentally hails from the area.

Naivasha subcounty commissioner Isaac Masinde had to intervene to cool tempers before ordering that the arrested government officer be released on free bond.

Addressing the farmers, Masinde said that an inquiry file had been opened following the allegation that the subchief was found in possession of the drug.

He added that anyone found to have lied in the case be it the chief or the arresting officer would face the full wrath of the law.

“The sub-chief has been released on a free bond and an inquiry file has been opened so that the case can be fully investigated,” he said.

Irungu, the emotional sub-chief said, that his life was in danger adding that some senior politicians who he had fallen out with were keen to eliminate him.

“I want to state openly that some people want to eliminate me for their own selfish interest and I ask for government protection,” he said.

A trader Tabitha Waithera from Maraigushu and who was recently arrested in unclear circumstances said that business had been adversely affected by the frequent police raids.
