DP Ruto declares those who dope will not be spared

Kenya Deputy President William Ruto has warned those engaging in doping activities they will face the full force of the law.

He said already one of the athletics officials, Michael Rotich is incarcerated over matters doping.

He warned everyone, irrespective of whether official or athlete, who gets involved in doping practices will not evade the full force of the law.

The DP was speaking upon arrival in Rio de Janeiro for the ongoing Olympic Games.

He said the government is committed to ensuring Kenyans run clean.

“A message has been sent out. All institutions of government from the executive to legislature have demonstrated our commitment as a nation to eliminating cheating. We want to run clean and ensure a clean running environment for our athletes as this is what Kenyans are well known for,” he said.

He said Kenyan athletes have been tested twice by the global anti-doping body and were also tested by local authorities and he has no doubt the country is on the track to recovery.

Ruto said as a nation, the government is doing all it can to ensure athletes compete in a free and clean environment.

“For the record, World Anti Doping Agency, IOC and IAAF know we have complied in as far as matters on doping are concerned. Apart from testing, part of the legislation was passed in record time by parliament and the law has been enforced,” Ruto said.

He said the move is aimed at ensuring millions of Kenyans who love the sport and hundreds of athletes are protected. He said the law will not spare anyone on the wrong side of it as far as doping us concerned.
