Veteran radio and print journalist Charles Kerich has been appointed chairman of the Media Council of Kenya.

ICT CS Joe Mucheru made the appointment in the latest Kenya Gazette, published Friday, August 12.

Kerich, who is also the head of content at Radio Africa Group and editor of the Star, will chair the council for three years. He replaces Levi Obonyo.

The CS also appointed Veronica Kuto, Violet Awori, Julius Kinyeki, Ahmed Ibrahim, Rev Paul Inuvu, Annette Okello and Elizabeth Limagur members of the council.

Kerich thanked the CS for the appointment and promised to lead the council to achieve its mandate.

Speaking from Mombasa where he received the news, Kerich said the Media Council has not been constituted for two years and there is a lot to be done.

"I particularly would like to see the Complaints Commission up and running again so that it can fulfil its mandate to arbitrate disputes,"he said

"The council will actively seek to promote professionalism and protect media practitioners. We have a great opportunity to ensure the media grows in an environment of professionalism," Kerich said.
