Cord leader Raila Odinga has accused the government of curtailing the media's freedom of speech.

Raila was referring to Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery's warning on bloggers spreading hate messages on social media.

"They want to control and muzzle the population. I was shocked by what the officials were saying yesterday," he said.

Raila said the country has seen a "scared regime" interfering with freedom of expression and the press.

"They have already compromised print and electronic.

People talk a lot of trash about me but that is their freedom," he said.

"Why are other people worried?".

The Cord chief said the proposal to regulate social media is not the correct way to do things adding "people should be allowed to speak freely even in rallies".

"That is the freedom that Trump enjoys in the US. If somebody says something negative you do not arrest them," he said.

Raila wanted to know exactly what hate speech refers to. He noted it has not been defined.

Some eight MPs had been arrested and detained in cells over hate speech remarks.

Raila further noted that democracy works when ways of responding to claims are sought, as two wrongs do not make a right.

Nkaissery warned on Tuesday that bloggers spreading hate messages on social media could trigger election-related violence in the run-up to 2017 polls.

He told a Joint Cohesion Committee of the Senate and National Assembly that other threats to national peace are politicians fueling hatred whenever they address a rally.

Nkaissery proposed to the committee that they need to come up with a legislation to to curb the threats posed by unnecessary hate messages coming out of these platform.

The meeting was attended by

ICT CS Joe Mucheru and IG Joseph Boinnet among other leaders.
