The Kisumu government has rejected claims it spent Sh10 million to ferry boda boda operators to Rwanda to learn how to improve business.

Education chief officer Samuel Okuro said on Saturday the county only spent Sh2.7 million on the five-trip.

Okuro said they travelled by road using buses hired from Lions High School and Nyabondo High School and not by air as alleged

“The operators learned a lot on security and safety issues in Rwanda”,Okuro said.

Governor Jack Ranguma had said the trip was meant to expose the operators to the need to restore law and order to their operations.

Ranguma said he was optimistic the operators learnt a lot and shared knowledge with their colleagues.

Speaking upon arrival in Kisumu from Rwanda on Saturday, Kisumu boda boda Association chairman Nelson Odire said people should stop politicising the trip because not everybody could be accommodated.

There were questions on how the operators were selected.

He said two people were selected from each ward in the county.

Odire said they had requested such a trip in early 2014 and were happy they finally went for the trip.

“Not everyone went for the trip and therefore, we have asked the governor and the education department to ensure we have forums in the wards to educate members who did not go,” he said.

The association coordinator, Sospeter Lich, said operators from Rwanda follow traffic rules and regulations.

“We will use the knowledge we got from Rwanda to streamline and improve boda boda business,”he said.

Some 112 people including two MCAs, three traffic police bosses in the county and other county officials accompanied the 69 boda boda operators on the trip.
