Some 24 people were admitted to Samburu County Referral Hospital in Maralal town after consuming contaminated meat.

The residents of Shabaa village were rushed to facility following complications after they ate the beef from a cow that died from an unknown disease.

Bonface Atandi, a doctor at the hospital, said they developed symptoms of diarrhea, stomachache and vomiting.

"Most of them were children of between 15 to 20 years. There were also the elderly including women and men. They were brought here while weak and dehydrated," Atandi said.

They shared the meat from the cow that had been sick for some time.

Atandi said 22 of those admitted were in stable condition and likely to be discharged on Monday.

Noting this was not the first case and that the consequences can be fatal, the

doctor discouraged residents from eating meat that is not inspected.

Atandi blamed lack of sufficient training among locals for the repeat cases of consumption of 'bad meat'.
