The Star's Parliament reporter Gideon Keter has on Friday been elected the new chairman of the Kenya Parliamentary Journalists Association.

Keter garnered 15 votes to clinch the chairmanship of the influential association, beating outgoing chairperson Roselyne Obala who managed 9 votes.

But Obala petitioned National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi to call for fresh elections.

She claimed the elections were not "open, free and fair", and that they violated KPJA laws.

She argued that there were serious irregularities, including the hijacking of the AGM.

She also claimed that non-members and non-compliant members of KPJA were allowed to vote.

In the hotly contested election, Qwetu FM's head of news Edwin Obuya was unanimously elected the Vice-chairperson.

K24 TV's Chemutai Goin who has been KPJA Deputy Secretary was also elected unopposed for the Secretary General position, previously held by Nation newspaper reporter Jeremiah Kiplang'at.

Kiplang'at opted out and did not defend his position.

Standard Newspaper's Wilfred Ayaga takes the Treasury position, previously held by Capital FM's Laban Wanambisi.

Ayaga garnered 13 votes, beating Ebru Africa's George Okachi by 7 votes.

Ruth Wanjiku of Radio Citizen is the Association's organising secretary, after beating George Okachi by 8 votes to 3 votes.

Radio Salaam reporter Caroline Korir is the Deputy Secretary, while Dennis Omondi of West FM beat Cavine Otieno of Lolwe TV with 13 votes against 6 votes to become the KPJA Liaison Officer.

KPJA is an association formed to advance the welfare of journalists seconded by various media houses to cover the Senate and the National Assembly proceedings.
