Four years into the devolved system, 10,000 squatters from the Kikuyu community living in Maji Mazuri, Eldama-Ravine in Baringo county have nothing to celebrate.

They have accused the county of discriminating against them in resource sharing. They named Governor Benjamin Cheboi and Eldama-Ravine MP Moses Lessonet.

Maji Mazuri Ward MCA Peter Kagathi Kimani on Wednesday told the media in Kabarnet town that over 10,000 people including 6,000 schoolgoing children were languishing in shanty homesteads as IDPs since the 2007-08 post election violence.

“Due to the increased population, it has forced up to three families to share a toilet besides congesting temporary-structures at Igure farm, Maji Mazuri, Makutano and Timoborua areas,” Kagathi said.

He said owing to the discrimination, there has been no allocation from either the county budget or the Constituency Development Fund to refurbish health facilities, schools and water sources. It is the only ward inhabited by the Kikuyu community.
