The demolition of 384 unsafe buildings in Nairobi resumes today in Huruma estate after a month-long break, Lands executive Christopher Khaemba has said.

The demolitions stopped following the breakdown of a National Youth Service excavator.

“We have been relying on the NYS for the machinery. The machine they gave us is in the garage. But the director general has assured us we will get it on Thursday and start the work,” he said.

This comes after a five-storey building collapsed in Kariobangi South on Tuesday.

Khaemba said court orders, faceless developers and shortage of machinery slowed down the demolitions.

He said the county has requested KDF to help them with machinery to knock down the structures.

“We have a consultation with the KDF to give us machinery. They have powerful ones that can bring down tall buildings, which are unsafe in the city,” Khaemba said.

The push to bring down unsafe residential buildings intensified after an apartment collapsed in Huruma Estate in April, killing 51 people.
