Several people were left homeless but none was injured in a fire at Kibera slum, Nairobi, on Tuesday.

Police said the cause of the fire at Gatwekera area, which spread from one house, had not been established. They launched investigations.

Affected residents asked the government to help them reconstruct their houses.

Several fire incidents have been reported in Nairobi's slum areas, authorities citing illegal electricity connections.

Lamu Island destroyed 12 makuti houses on Tuesday, leaving more than 60 people affected.

The fire is said to have started at the home of an elderly woman who was overwhelmed in attempts to it out.

Firefighters were also delayed by the lack of access routes, forcing residents to use water and sand.

No one was injured in the incident but nothing was salvaged as strong winds fanned the flames.

The village is home to more than 2,000 people, most of whom are squatters.

In April, three houses went up in flames and property of unknown value was destroyed after a fire that started at one of the homes.
