President Uhuru Kenyatta will host 30 heads of state this month during the Tokyo International Conference of Africa’s Development.

This will be the first time the conference is held outside Tokyo.

The two-day summit will be opened by Uhuru and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe on August 27.

Abe will hold bilateral talks with Uhuru. The President will chair an African Peer Review Mechanism meeting, State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu said in a statement yesterday.

The summit will discuss trade, how to implement universal healthcare in Africa, health systems and sexual and reproductive health.

There will be a First Ladies’ conference to discuss women, HIV and Aids, maternal and child health. There will be a focus on cancer in children and young people.

Ticad seeks to highlight the importance of moving Africa from aid reliance to self-sustainability with support from Japan and other development partners.

The forum comes a month after Kenya hosted the fourteenth session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. The Nairobi Azimio declaration was signed during the summit.
