A Briton who was haul in Mombasa has been released, intelligence sources said on Tuesday.

An official from the US-based Drug Enforcement Agency said the Briton had no links with the seizure.

"He was trailed from Santo in Brazil where the cargo was loaded but investigations has revealed that he had no any connections with the seized cocaine," the officer said.

Investigations are now focused on how the vessel purported to have ferried the drugs disappeared from the port.

MSC Posetano is said to have been sneaked out of berth number 16 of Mombasa port and is currently in the Kismayo Port in Somalia.

Detectives allege that the vessel might have carried deadly weapons currently being offloaded to enable al Shabaab militants fight AU soldiers in Somalia.

Suspicion arose after MSC Nicole, which docked at the same berth, was hastily ordered to offload its cargo.

Posetano docked on July 27 at 10.50pm and left on July 29 at 4.30am, while the Nicole, which docked on July 29 at 5.15am, left on July 30 at 8.30am.

State officials are yet to address issues surrounding the vessel's disappearance including the doctoring of the bill of lading, and why the vessel was sneaked out of the port.

They are also yet to disclose the exact value of the seized cocaine.

Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery said he is awaiting briefing once investigations are complete.
