The Lamu Health department has received two boat ambulances worth Sh7 million from the Al-Khair Foundation, US. Speaking during the official handover at the King Fhad Lamu County Referral Hospital, Governor Issa Timamy said one would be stationed on the islands and the other at the hospital.
The ambulances can seat six passengers and are equipped with a stretcher, oxygen tanks, safety jackets, storage compartment and radio. The new ambulances come two weeks after Fist Lady Margaret Kenyatta handed over a Beyond Zero mobile clinic to the county.
Present was a representative of the Al-Khair Foundation, Mohamed Tarik, who is also the country director, and Health executive Kombo Mbwana. Timamy said Lamu hospitals are undergoing major renovations. “By December King Fhad Hospital will be better than Pandya Hospital in Mombasa,” he said.
Timamy said when he took office, the hospital handled less than four maternal cases a month but the number has risen to 80. He said the Witu and Faza theatres are receiving final touches.
