Most national ID card registration officers in Nairobi are idle because they have no one to serve, county commissioner Godfrey Kigochi has said.

He said the residents do not apply for the document, despite the importance attached to it.

“ID registration is ongoing, but people are not turning up. Our officers are idle because they have nobody to attend to,” Kigochi said.

Speaking during the Madaraka Day celebrations at Pumwani Sports Ground on Wednesday, he urged politicians to mobilise their supporters to register for IDs.

“Mobilise your supporters, they won't vote for you if they don't have IDs,” Kigochi said.

He said he will soon hold barazas in all the 17 subcounties to sensitise the public on the need to peacefully co-exist ahead of next year's elections.

Kigochi presided over the county's first ever national day celebrated outside Nyayo Stadium.

He urged residents to embrace the Nyumba Kumi initiative, saying the war on crime and terrorism can only be won when the public and security agencies collaborate.

“Security is a responsibility of all of us. I urge you [the public] to help us identity the criminals so we can weed them out. Know your neighbour and if you identity any sinister thing, report to us,” the administrator said.

He said the fight against illicit liquor will continue, adding that the county will not develop if “alcohol becomes a daily meal”.

Starehe MP Maina Kamanda urged the security agencies not to tolerate anyone interfering with the peace of city residents.

He condemned the acts of violence and lawlessness witnessed in the recent weeks during Cord demonstrations against IEBC commissioners.

“We are a peace loving county. We don't want some people to incite our youth for their own political interests,” Kamanda said.
