The Sh608 million Mandera-Wargadud Airport project has run into headwinds barely a week after President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto launched it.

Alawahad Enterprises, associated with a top Jubilee politician, moved to court last Wednesday to stop the construction. Documents obtained by the Star dated April 11 show Kenya Airports Authority acting managing director Yatich Kangugo wrote to Alawahad Enterprises and Concordia Build and Civil Engineering awarding them the tender for a joint venture. Concordia is also linked to the politician.

The letter states that the contract would be signed by the parties on the submission of the performance guarantee within 28 days.

However, the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board overturned the tender award and instructed KAA to award it to SEO and Sons Limited, terming Concordia Build and Civil Engineering and Alawahad Enterprises “non-responsive”.

The board recommended that Alawahad and Concordia’s applications be re-admitted for technical and financial evaluation.
