Cord threatens to hold Madaraka Day demos if locked out of Uhuru Park

Cord has threatened that it will hold demonstrations in Nairobi on Wednesday during Madaraka Day celebrations should they be blocked from accessing Uhuru Park grounds.

The coalition insisted that they plan to use the venue to hold the fete, while President Uhuru Kenyatta.

A section of ODM MPs who spoke to the Star on Monday said they are ready to face the police head-on should they block Cord supporters from accessing Uhuru Park.

Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati dismissed threats by Interior CS Joseph Nkaisserry to arrest Cord leaders who will defy orders to keep off the venue.

The MP referred to the CS as "part of a rotten system" that should be done away with.

"On Wednesday you will see, if it is the street battles that Nkaisserry and the police want, we are very ready to go the the streets tomorrow to show our displeasure," Arati said.

"Uhuru Park is in my constituency and we will go there with all our supporters in Nairobi," he added.

ODM's Director of Political Affairs Opiyo Wandayi confirmed that they have finalised their agenda for Madaraka Day.

"That rally at Uhuru Park can turn violent if the police start confronting us [as] they will be setting events that they will not be able to control," the Ugunja MP said.

Head of the Cord secretariat Norman Magaya also told the Star that preparations to host Cord principals at Uhuru Park were at top gear.

He added that sitting arrangements and installation of sound systems begins on Tuesday morning.

"From today we will be visiting the venue to ensure preparations are running smoothly. You will see the mammoth crowd that will attend the rally and no amount of resistance can stop us from accessing the Park," Magaya said.

The opposition intends to use Madaraka Day to hype their calls for dialogue over IEBC as well us set the tempo for .
