Kaibere Primary School in Gatundu North, which was condemned after cracks started emerging on its walls, will be rebuilt.

The Star on Friday carried the story where pupils take classes in corridors and in the field. Kiambu woman representative Anna Nyokabi visited the school on Friday. She said she raised the issue with Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who has pledged to have the school rebuilt.

Nyokabi said she spoke with MP Kigo Njenga, who said CDF will use the emergency fund to start the construction as the Treasury makes arrangements to release more funds. The cracks on the school walls started emerging in 2009.

The school management board has unsuccessfully tried to source funds for repairs from the Education ministry and the CDF, said chairman Joseph Macharia Kamau.

The school was started by former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta in 1968.

Kiambu county Administration and Public Finance chief officer Dominic Gicheru accompanied the MP. He said the county will source funds to buy extra repair material.

When it rains, the 248 pupils and their teachers take classes on the verandah.

The classrooms and staffroom were condemned in January, after long

cracks were seen on walls and floors. The school has dilapidated buildings which engineers say are no longer safe.

Six of the school’s eight classrooms that accommodated 180 pupils have been condemned. Pupils and teachers said they suffer as a result of being rained on.
