A student was on Friday shot by a stray bullet during a chase of an inmate who had escaped from Migori GK prison.

The girl was referred to Tenwek Hospital in Bomet county where she is undergoing treatment.

A relative confirmed that she was safe at the hospital, disputing earlier reports that she had died.

The warders were trailing a prisoner who had escaped from their noose and had sought refuge at Migori Boys Secondary School, which is adjacent to the Migori GK Prison .

The form one student of Ulanda Girls was participating in the ongoing Lake Region secondary schools term two A games hosted at the school.

She had been rushed to the nearby St Joseph Mission Hospital following the mid-morning incident.

Several gunshots rented the air as the warders tried to flush out the convict who was believed had sought refuge at the school's dormitory.

Many students collapsed and fainted from shock upon hearing that their colleague was shot.

Suna East legislator Junet Mohamed urged

law enforcement agencies, particularly in Nyanza, to temper their use of lethal force with reason and moderation.

Migori police commander David Kirui said: “The student might have been hit by a stray bullet as the warders were shooting in the air,”

“It is unfortunate and we have instructed criminal investigation officers to locate the warder who will face charges of mishandling a firearm,” Kirui said.

By the time of going to press, the prisoner was yet to be re-arrested.

The shooting comes days after five demonstrators were shot in the town on Monday during protests against IEBC.

Suna West MP aspirant Valentine Ogongo called for the transfer of officers at Migori GK prison for being “trigger happy” and careless with guns.

“This new incident has brought bad blood between residents and police,” Ogongo said.

On Monday police said the five demonstrators who were shot had tried to block a prisons van transporting inmates from Kehancha Law courts to Migori GK prisons.
