MPs yesterday passed the amended Anti-Doping Bill and it awaits Senate’s approval next week before it is taken to the President for assent.

The bill had been passed earlier, but the World Anti-Doping Agency rejected it, saying it contained amendments it had not approved.

MPs blamed Attorney General Githu Muigai for the standoff between Kenya and Wada over non-compliance.

Parliament and the Sports ministry distanced themselves from accusations of watering down Wada’s proposals Kenya.

Majority leader Aden Duale said Parliament did not make any changes to the bill during its passage last month as given by Sports CS Hassan Wario and Muigai’s office.

Duale said the MPs were told conditions barring them from making changes that would render the bill non-compliant were issued by Wada.

“We have been hearing from the media that Parliament watered down the bill. It should be known that this House never made changes to the bill during the passage,” he said.

“Failure to adhere to Wada provisions may have been caused by the Attorney General’s office or the Sports ministry. The executive is to blame for failure.”

Wario said he was shocked to hear Wada had declared the bill non-compliant.
