Some maize farmers in Trans Nzoia demonstrated against delays in the supply of government subsidised topdressing fertiliser.

More than 150 farmers carrying twigs and leaves marched to the National Cereals and Produce Board offices on the outskirts of Kitale town.

Led by Daniel Serem, the farmers the board's management informed them each farmer will get six bags of CAN, but none has received a single bag.

"The rains are so heavy and our maize crops are yellowing due to deep infiltration of soil nutrients. We are here to push for release of the commodity since failure to apply the fertiliser in time will cause huge losses," he said.

Serem said the NCPB officials said only a few bags of the topdressing fertiliser are remaining so farmers will have to share them.

The NCPB said brokers easily accessed the fertilizer to resell it at higher prices, which caused the shortage.
