The political landscape in Northeastern could be headed for a major shift as the country gears up for the general election.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s three-day tour of the region was a major boost for the Jubilee administration.

He launched major projects, including the tarmacking of major roads that the previous regimes have ignored. Among the MPs who declared they were ditching Cord for Jubilee are Ibrahim Abass of Ijara constituency in Garissa.

In Wajir, where Cord was overwhelmingly voted for in 2013, the MPs who have hinted at changing parties include Ibrahim Saney (Wajir North), Abdullahi Diriye (Wajir South) and woman representative Fatuma Ibrahim. Speaking during a baraza addressed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto, Saney said his party leader has “never hit the target” and he knows he will not win next year.

Diriye said the Jubilee administration has proved to be concerned about the plights of a region that has been sidelined by previous regimes. Ibrahim said, “As it stands there are all indications that the economy of Northeastern is headed for a turnaround if the projects launched by the President were anything to go by.”
