ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi yesterday said President Uhuru Kenyatta will be held responsible if the current IEBC impasse degenerates into a full-blown ethnic conflict. He said the President’s failure to initiate dialogue and the use of excessive force by police will result in an unmanageable security situation.

On Monday, three people were killed and several injured by police during anti-IEBC protests in Kisumu and Siaya counties. “I am concerned about the heightened tension prior to the next elections. This hands-off stand must stop,” Mudavadi said in a statement.

He said protests arise when one side fails to listen to the other. “The President and his team are alone in insisting on a legal process that should come at the tail-end of dialogue on changes,” Mudavadi said.

He condemned police brutality and said street protests are constitutional. “The right to protest is enshrined in our constitution. Any group protesting is well within its rights,” Mudavadi said. “We expect police to provide security to prevent loss of life or damage of property.”
