Laikipia East MP Anthony Mutahi wants thousands of squatters evicted from Kwa Mbuzi and Kahurura more than 30 years ago resettled.

Addressing the press in Nanyuki town yesterday, Mutahi said the squatters need to be resettled like those in other parts of the country. The Kwa Mbuzi squatters were evicted in 1989, with the government saying the land belonged to Kenya Defence Forces.

The legislator said they should be resettled because they have rights, just as other squatters. “Just like the government resettled squatters at Solio settlement scheme, it should also consider those from Kwa Mbuzi and Kahurura,” Mutahi said.

The Parliamentary Land Committee on Saturday visited Solio ranch. Chairman Mburi Muiru said investigations into the ranch’s ownership are underway after it was claimed the land is state-owned. The revelations widened controversy over irregular allocation of land to squatters resettled in 2009. The committee visited the land to investigate the irregular allocation claims, where scores of undeserving people were allegedly settled. Kieni MP Kanini Kega said there are claims the 60,000-acre privately owned ranch belongs to the government and that unscrupulous brokers sold part of the land to the government to settle squatters.
