Some Jubilee MPs yesterday dismissed Cord’s anti-IEBC demonstrations, terming them a plot to orchestrate chaos and scuttle the 2017 general election.

They urged the government to intervene urgently and end the discontent among Cord supporters.

Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa said the continuous protests might destabilize the country and plunge the nation into chaos similar to those witnessed in 2007-08.

He said “the demos are a mere smokescreen for anarchy” that Cord leader Raila Odinga intends to reign on Kenyans.

“He wants to do this in their thirst for illicit power acquired over Kenyans.

Their ultimate objective is to scuttle the 2017 election so they can demand a caretaker government,”Ichung’wa told the Star yesterday.

Cord yesterday held its fourth anti-IEBC demonstration in Nairobi, Kakamega, Kisumu and Mombasa, but riot police dispersed the protesters.

Makadara MP Benson Mutura warned that there will be a constitutional crisis should the IEBC commissioners resign.

He said Parliament is yet to enact a law that guides reconstitution of the IEBC.

“If the IEBC officials were to resign today, we shall plunge the country into a total constitutional crisis,” Mutura said.

Gatundu North MP Kigo Njenga said the ongoing Cord protests are not meant to eject the IEBC commissioners, but to polarise the country ahead of 2017.

He said Jubilee is not keen on keeping the commissioners in office, but the procedure to remove them.

“We do not require the commissioners ourselves as Jubilee. What we want to see is the law being followed to remove them,” Njenga said.

“You cannot create a banana republic where everybody does what he wants. Raila Odinga and his team do not have Kenya

at heart.”
