One dead as Kisumu IEBC protests turn bloody

One person has died as police tried to

disperse protesters in Kisumu during anti-IEBC demos.

The police allegedly beat up the man on the head leaving him for dead, according

to witnesses and graphic images seen by the Star.

Aga Khan hospital head Dr Sam Oula

confirmed the death but rejected claims by leaders that he had gunshot wounds.

The hospital said the man may have been hit with a blunt

object.

He has been admitted to Aga Khan hospital in critical condition where he was rushed by two Members of Parliament as blood oozed out of his head.

Several other protesters have also been injured.

The incident added 'fuel to fire' as protesters got more angry and lit bonfires and threw stones at the police.

They waved placards written "IEBC must go" as they engaged the police in running battles.

In Nairobi, the protesters engaged police in running battles along University way, City Hall way and Moi avenue with the police saying they will not allow any protesters around the Anniversary Towers.

Police also lobbed tear gas canisters on Kibera protesters as they tried to march towards the CBD.

Most shops were closed in Kibera's Olympic area as hundreds carried stones and placards on their way to Nairobi.

Individuals trying to access the slum were being asked by the police to go back to their homes.Most businesses along Moi Avenue and Anniversary towers remained closed.

Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula are yet to arrive at the scene.

In Nakuru, tension remained high as the police arrested several protesters.Witnesses said the police were searching for

Earlier, the police fired teargas to disperse hundreds of protesters demonstrating in Mombasa county as .

Police in ant-riot gear patrolled the streets while businesses stayed closed for fear of looting.

It is the fourth running week of the protests called by the opposition to remove IEBC commissioners from office.

Cord leader Raila Odinga accused the IEBC of bias and said its members should quit.

IEBC officials have dismissed the claims and reiterated they will stay in office.

President Uhuru Kenyatta called on Cord not to stage street protests against the IEBC and asked them to pursue other peaceful means.

But the coalition

urged police to during their anti-IEBC protests following allegations that three Jubilee politicians were planning to hire armed criminal gangs to cause chaos.
