A boat with contraband fishing nets and poisoned fish was on Wednesday intercepted on Mulukoba Beach in Budalang’i constituency.
The boat owners escaped. Mulukoba Beach Management Unit task force chairman Pius Olengo said there have been rising incidences of fish being poisoned and sold. This has hurt the health of residents.
He said the beach security team has partnered with law enforcement officers at Port Victoria to patrol the area.
“We will restore sanity and ensure only recommended fishing gear is used,” Olengo said.
Last year, the national government deployed patrol vessels in Lake Victoria to stop illegal fishing.
Fisheries officials have said pollution has diminished the number of fish caught.
This has made the trade unattractive.
