A 55-year-old watchman died in Murang’a town on Wednesday night when a perimeter wall collapsed onto his house.

Peter Kabugi was in his house preparing supper when the wall collapsed following a downpour.

Police officers and Red Cross volunteers had a hard time trying to rescue the man from the rubble. It took them more than four hours to get him out, but it was too late as he was dead.

The 7.30pm incident also displaced some residents in the neighbourhood and damaged several private vehicles.

Hezron Mwaura, who owns the building in the compound whose wall collapsed, said Kabugi was inside a makeshift shelter that had been built against the wall when it collapsed.

He said efforts to rescue him were hampered by the heavy rains in Murang’a town. Mwaura said mud from the wall was swept into the houses of some tenants, forcing them to seek shelter elsewhere. He said a power blackout that followed worsened the situation as residents joined the search for the watchman.
