President Uhuru Kenyatta started a tour of Northeastern yesterday.

He commissioned the tarmacking of the Sh2.5 billion Elwak–Rhamu road. The 135km road will be built in three phases - Elwak-Wargadud, Wargadud-Bambo and Bambo-Rhamu.

Uhuru was accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto and President Kenyatta. Mandera Governor Ali Roba and Senator Billow Kerrow were present. Speaking at Elwak town, Uhuru said his visit affirms the Jubilee government’s determination to ensure no part of the country lags in development.

“We want to ensure lack of development is no longer used as a political tool. We assure you the Jubilee government will remain focused in its all-inclusive approach to development,” he said.

Uhuru said the government has increased the number of security officers and equipped them to deal with insecurity. He urged residents to cooperate with the security agencies and expose criminals.

The President also urged residents to shun divisive politics and live in harmony. “No development will be achieved if communities are divided along clan and tribal lines. Do not allow these divisions to undermine peace,” Uhuru said.

The President said the national government is working with the county to improve healthcare.

Uhuru said the government has set aside Sh380 million to distribute specialised equipment at Elwak Level 4 Hospital under the Managed Equipment Service project. He said a similar amount will be used to improve facilities at Mandera District Hospital. Through the national government’s Managed Equipment Service project, two hospitals in every county are being equipped with MRI, theatre, renal dialysis, radiology and ICU equipment.

Uhuru said the government has set aside Sh50 million for a medical training college in Elwak town.
