Kisii Governor James Ongwae yesterday praised Education CS Fred Matiang’i for banning social functions like funerals in schools.

Ongwae spoke at a Kisumu hotel during the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association Kisii branch AGM. He said the ban should be implemented by all stakeholders. “Such functions should be held on weekends because they interfere with classes. The stakeholders should have a dialogue over this to avoid confrontations,” the governor said.

However, some head teachers say the ban is likely to bring conflict between school management committees and the community. Ongwae urged principals to guard against cheating in national examinations. “It pains me when cheating cases are reported in schools. Please ensure there is no cheating this time,” he said.

Ongwae was with Education executive Skitter Ocharo, Kisii County Education Board chairman Henry Onderi and KSSHA chairman Jairus Onchoke. The governor challenged head teachers to ensure their schools’ academic performance improves.
