Residents of Sofia village, Gatondo sublocation, in Nyandarua county, burned six houses on Monday following the killing of a 30-year-old woman. Tabitha Kamau, a mother of three, was raped and killed a week ago. The burned houses belonged to the family of Mwangi Giteni. Residents said they will eliminate the whole family if the members do not leave the village. They accuse them of being criminals who allegedly “rape and kill with impunity”. The residents accused police of failing to act, despite having been sufficiently informed.

“We would have spared the houses if the police were helping us. But they are miserably inept,” a resident said. Residents said after Kamau was killed, Giteni, the father of the suspected killers, warned of dire consequences for anyone who pursues the matter. Kamau was killed as she walked home from her business at Sofia shopping centre and her body dumped in a stream. One of the suspects is said to have warned her that she will “die some day”. The case of another suspect accused of raping Kamau’s sister a year ago is in court.
