A Murang’a MP has accused Cord of attempting to take power through the back door by staging numerous protests against the electoral agency.

Kigumo’s Jamleck Kamau said the opposition’s protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission are not meant to remove the commissioners, but to prepare the country for a coalition government after next year’s general election.

He said Cord is intent on causing chaos that could lead to power sharing, after realising it is unlikely to win the presidential election.

Kamau said Cord leaders, led by Raila Odinga, know the legal process that should be followed to disband the IEBC, but opt to organise protests against the commission.Speaking at Gikomora ACCS Church on Sunday, the MP said Raila should respect the constitution, which he fought for, instead of engaging in “unnecessary” demonstrations.

Learnt lesson

“Why does Raila want to go against the law by organising illegal protests when he knows the procedure that should be followed to dissolve IEBC?” Kamau said.

He said the demonstrations are aimed at preparing Kenyans for post-poll chaos if Cord loses the elections.

“The opposition should know Kenyans learnt a lesson from the 2007-08 post-election violence and are not ready to engage in violence again,” Kamau said. He said Kenyans are peace-loving and should not be thrust into needless conflicts by leaders pursuing their selfish interests.

The legislator said Parliament will invite the opposition leaders to authenticate their allegations against the IEBC, then MPs will start the process of removing them from office if the claims are genuine. Kamau said he is not sure if the opposition leaders would appear in Parliament to substantiate their claims.
