Four men were killed in a fierce shoot-out over land,

between members of Kapsiren and Kabishoi clans of Marakwet East.

The clans have been fighting over a piece of land in Kerio Valley, said

Elgeyo Marakwet county police commander Shariff Abdallah.

Abdallah said those behind the killings on Thursday are still at large but that patrols were intensified and investigations launched.

He said on Friday that the bodies were taken to Kapsowar mission hospital mortuary.

Tot resident Evans Kosgei said many people have vacated the area following the clashes. He said women and children have been living in bushes in Kerio Escarpment.

DP William Rutto said on Friday that cases of banditry and inter-clan fights in Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo counties are "primitive and foolish".

Ruto said at Kamasia Secondary School that

the frequent clashes have limited development.

“We must tell the truth. Some people are trying to take us back to the dark old days of cattle rustling,” he said.

“Cattle theft and the killing of innocent people must stop. I am asking the county commissioner and his team to eradicate the menace."

He said police officers have enough vehicles and other resources required to secure the region.
