Deputy President William Ruto has challenged the Opposition to practice mature politics and observe the rule of law when addressing issues.

He said the government had strengthened independent institutions to perform their functions as envisaged in the Constitution.

"The Constitution is clear on how to resolve our issues but they have decided to choose the path of demonstration and destruction of property," he said.

The Deputy President said the protests being organized by CORD in an attempt to force IEBC commissioners out of office indicate the coalition's disrespect of the Constitution.

Ruto also said Cord’s mudslinging politics that accompanied the late businessman Jacob Juma’s death was clear that they were ready to exploit any unfortunate incident to ascend to power.

The DP

spoke on Sunday during a church service and roadside meetings in Lari Constituency, Kiambu County.

Eight Members of Parliament allied to Jubilee Party who accompanied him also strongly criticized Cord leaders saying they were out to cause chaos.

The MPs included Mburu Kahangara (Lari), Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete), Njoroge Baiya (Githunguri), Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu), Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Kigo Njenga (Gatundu North), John Waiganjo (Ol jororok) and Kiambu Women Representative Ann Nyokabi.

They said the Opposition was exploiting the Juma’s death to endear itself to Western Kenya without caring about the plight of the family he left behind.

They said the Opposition and their cronies should be investigated on the death of Mr Juma.

Ruto and the MPs said the Cord fraternity had sensed defeat in next year's elections and that is why they were engaging in protests and maligning people.

The MPs said the Opposition knew that the Government had nothing to do with Juma’s death but were only engaging in politics to popularize their party.

They argued that Juma's unfortunate death was being used to whip up emotions in Western Kenya where Jubilee was making inroads.

"They are not mourning with the family of Juma. They are celebrating because they are using it for their personal ambitions. They are saying this is what we should use to finish Jubilee. That is very evident. Everyone can see through this script," Kuria said.

He said the leaders and other individuals had hijacked Juma's death for selfish political reasons with the hope of using it in next year's General Election.

Ichungwa said some of individuals in Cord had met and hatched a plot to use the death to malign the Deputy President.

"The Opposition is collecting anything; they are desperate because they know they will lose the elections," Ichungwa said.

They told the Opposition to stop hiding in funerals and misfortunes of other people in an attempt to score political points.

The MPs asked Cord leaders to give any information they have on Juma’s death to investigators.

“If they are interested in the justice of those killed they should not take advantage of the misfortunes of others. They should not be making political statements in funerals but to the investigative authorities,” Ruto said.

On his part, Kuria said the IEBC was a creation of Cord leader Raila Odinga and former President Mwai Kibaki.

“Our leaders have no mandate under the constitution to disband the IEBC without a parliamentary process. I urge the commissioners not to bow to Cord pressure," Waiganjo said.
