The Coast Parliamentary Group is working with Haki Africa to draft a bill for outright compensation to victims of police brutality.

The bill will propose that the state foot any expenses incurred during the attack, trial and mental pain victims suffer as a result of the attack.

CPG chairman Gunga Mwinga said reckless attacks by law enforcers are on the rise and if nothing is done, the situation will get out of hand.

The Kaloleni MP said a proper mechanism must force the state to compensate victims or their families in case of death and injuries.

He referred to Kwekwe Mwandaza, a child from Kwale county, shot dead by two police officers in 2014.

The officers were charged with murder, but sentenced to only seven years in prison for manslaughter.

“It is sad the family failed to get compensation from the government, despite the outrageous encounter,” Mwinga said on Thursday at Haki Africa’s offices in Mombasa. He said the IPOA should ensure justice for the family.
