The fate of the Football Kenya Federation women’s premier league kick off still hangs in the balance.

According to a statement by the women’s premier league chairman Fred Chege and the secretary general Amos Kimani to the national office on Thursday, the Premier league clubs were requesting for more time to better plan the league since there were financial challenges that have crippled most teams.

They added that many may not play due to lack of sponsorship.

Part of the statement read: “We are happy to be involved in nurturing our ladies’ football talent and commit to doing our best to support our girls. We need to have sponsorship for all teams for us to be able to effectively compete on the same level. We need to work closely as stakeholders and mobilise resources for all the clubs. We need and humbly are requesting you to give us more time (three weeks) to be able to talk to our wellwishers so that we can be able at least to raise some money,”

They further proposed to play a one leg league with teams meeting once rather than play in zones.

“We can even consider playing a one-leg league which will have all teams meeting each other rather than playing zones and meeting one team twice.”

The FKF competitions department responded by indicating round one matches scheduled for the weekend had been moved to a later date.

“Kindly note round one matches of the weekend of May 14 and 15 have been postponed as we wait for the president, vice president and CEO to give a way forward on the matter,” read the statement.

The league was scheduled to kick off in the first week of May but was pushed back by a week.

Elsewhere Wycliffe Ochomo has emerged as a top target for Gor Mahia.

The burly striker currently attached to Muhoroni Youth has been the best performer in Kenyan Premier League this season, banging in nine goals in twelve matches. This form has not gone unnoticed, with Gor Mahia’s Brazilian coach Jose Marcello, reportedly among those interested in his services.

Gor Mahia are also considering other options including recalling Timothy Otieno from his season long loan spell at Posta Rangers, while Azam FC striker Allan Wanga has also been discussed alongside Rwandan national Meddie Kagere.

These three options are considered plan ‘B’, however, as Ochomo, who started out at Gor Mahia before moving to Ulinzi Stars, is clear favourite. The Kenyan Premier League champions have struggled to score goals this season since the departure of Michael Olunga to paid ranks in Europe.

The team has scored thirteen goals so far in the league, five less than table toppers Tusker FC and a source within the team’s management has told Goal that they are less than convinced by this statistic.
