The six members of Nakuru Public Service Board who appeared before the county ad hoc committee this week gave contradicting figures of the exact number of staff they have employed.

On Tuesday, the chairman of the board Waithanji Mutiti and the secretary of PSB James Mbugua said they only hired 90 ward administrators as requested by the chief officer of public service management Philip Sigei.

Mutiti and Mbugua also told the ad hoc committee of employing 21 staffs who were to fill the position of deputy subcounty officers.

This position does not exist in the County Government Act.

The duo also said only 34 people were hired without being interviewed and included in the payroll by the chief officer of lands Victor Dereva, who has been interdicted.

But board members Peter Mbae and Richard Tutah said 80 ward administrators were hired, and 116 staffers were never interviewed for their positions.

Mbae said he was shocked to learn 116 people were hired and included in the county payroll without appearing before the PSB.

Another member to the board of PSB Peter Mwarania told the committee on Wednesday that they hired 80 ward administrators, but he has proof of 130 staffers earning salaries yet they were never employed.

Mwarania told the committees among the 130 illegal staff, 22 of them were included in the payroll on March 1 last year.

He also said all the illegal employment took place in 2015.

Last week, the chief officer of the public service management told the Star that since the inception of the PSB in 2013 they have only hired 321 workers.

The ad hoc committee will take a five-day break to analyse all the information gathered from the PSB.
