Cord leader Raila Odinga has written to President Uhuru Kenyatta renewing calls for dialogue over the IEBC.

He told Uhuru the letter was a reminder of one he wrote two years ago, which Jubilee dismissed.

“I hereby renew this call and restate the commitment of the members of Cord to an orderly and peaceful deliberation on our challenges,” Raila said.

On Monday, Uhuru met Jubilee leaders and it was agreed that any electoral reforms issues must pass through Parliament.

This was reiterated yesterday by Deputy President William Ruto, who accused Cord of trying to blackmail the state through threats and protests.

Cord has been holding demonstrations at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission headquarters to get the commissioners to resign.

A source who attended the State House meeting told the Star that the Justice Committee was directed to propose changes to the IEBC Act.

“It was part of the recommendations that the committee fast-tracks the changes to the IEBC Act,” the source said.

“The meeting resolved to press Cord to use legal channels so it doesn’t come out that Jubilee was yielding to Cord pressure,” the source said.

A proposal to have a multi-sectoral approach in the constitution of the new-look commission and the need to have the current number scaled from seven to five who serve on a part-time basis is under discussion.

National Assembly majority leader Aden Duale confirmed that he attended but denied claims that the fate of IEBC commissioners was dismissed.

“Nothing about the commission was discussed ... Cord should use the legal channels. The meeting dwelt on how to organise the launch of the Jubilee Party in June,” Duale said.
