Seven aspirants have shown interest in the Baringo Central MP post, currently held by Sammy Mwaita.

Mwaita, who is serving his second term, has an uphill task to shake down his opponents.

The prospective candidates have already hit the ground with numerous community support projects as they sharpen their daggers to beat him at the ballot box.

Mwaita, a former commissioner of lands, won the seat in 2007 after President Daniel arap Moi retired. He defeated Moi's son Gideon, the current senator for Baringo county.

On top of his worries is a Germany-based businessman Joshua Kandie who has bought three fire engines and funded the training of fire fighters, increased bed capacity at Baringo Referral Hospital in Kabarnet by 60, and bought new practical equipment for Kapsoo Technical Institute.

Through German Brothers, Kandie has also pioneered Kapsogo Secondary School, where he has awarded scholarships to 10 form one students annually since 2013.

Kandie has said: “I am just setting the way straight on how things should be done.”

He vied for the post in 2013 and came third after Hosea Kiplagat.

Although Kiplagat has not announced any interest in vying again, the rumour mill has it he will run for MP.

Other fresh aspirants earmarked to scramble for the hot seat are Nairobi-based lawyer Silas Kiplagat, Dr Wesley Tomno, Simon Yatich arap Namba and Kapropita MCA Solomon Chemjor.

It is reported that the aspirants are organising funds drives to complete stalled projects funded by the CDF, as a way to sabotage the Mwaita's leadership.

The aspirants accuse Mwaita of neglecting residents in some parts where he got few votes such as Salawa, Tenges and Sacho.

They also link him to the upsurge in land grabbing cases in the county, including public utilities, at the time he was serving as Commissioner for Lands in the Moi regime.

But Mwaita says he has done many things positive things in Baringo Central and he will be re-elected for a third term.

On Sunday in Kabarnet town, he distributed 300 warm jackets to boda boda operators.
