The Kajiado government will open up several bypasses and slip roads to ease perennial traffic jams in Ongata Rongai and Kitengela towns.

The two towns are under the Nairobi Metropolitan region and referred to as "bedrooms of the city".

Kajiado Governor David Nkedianye on Monday said he got some money through a supplementary budget vote for the implementation of opening up the roads.

He was addressing the press after meeting with stakeholders from the matatu sector, businesspeople, traffic police and the Provincial Administration in Ongata Rongai.

Nkedianye said work on the Maasai Lodge-Rimpa road, which is a bypass in Ongata Rongai, will be opened up by the county government at the end of May.

He said the Kenya Rural Roads Authority will team up with the county government to building the bypass from Maasai Lodge to Rimpa through Ongata Rongai.

The governor said the road from Maasai Mall-Nakeel through Tuskys Chap Chap in Ongata Rongai, will also be improved to provide alternative route for vehicles plying the Bomas-Ongata Rongai-Kiserian.

The Gataka-Cooperative College road, Nkedianye said, will also be opened up for the same reasons while the Tuskys Stage in the town will be expanded.

He said the bus stage on the junction of Maasai Lodge in Ongata Rongai town will be expanded by the Kenya National Highways Authority.

In Kitengela, Nkedianye said, the road linking Viwandani through Kitengela Medical Hospital has been graveled and is ready for use by motorists coming from Athi River.

The bypass passes through Kitengela Medical Hospital and at the base of the town’s market before emerging out of Club 411 to join with Kitengela Isinya Road.

He said his office is liaising with traffic departments in Ongata Rongai and Kitengela towns to direct motorists to the bypasses, instead of wasting time driving through the urban centres.
