Isiolo residents will soon be able to travelling faster by air as the Isiolo International Airport, a Vision 2030 flagship project, is to begin operations in four weeks.

This was revealed yesterday when Kenya Airports Authority officials visited the Sh2.7 billion facility to assess construction progress and quality of the work.

The opening date has yet to be announced.

Managing Director Yatich Kangugo said they are satisfied with the work.

He was accompanied by aeronautical and structural engineers.

Kangugo said the modern airport has been built in three phases.

Isiolo Governor Godana Doyo urged residents and those in neighbouring counties to use the airport to improve their businesses.

Doyo said they can now transport perishable goods such as miraa, meat and horticultural produce to international markets.

He said the opening of the Isiolo abattoir will also be a game changer.

Pastoralists will be able to sell their animals for slaughter.

Meat and meat products could be exported through the airport, the governor added.

“Isiolo town will be an international hub for development in future if the government’s Vision 2030 flagship projects are completed in the near future,” Doyo said.

Kangugo said most people who were living near the airport or on flight paths have been compensated.

He said the remaining few will be resettled once the authority and the National Land Commission reach an agreement.
